An Irish Christmas Thought

Well Christmas is coming and it's the time when all thoughts turn to presents, peace and joy and all the goody things in the world. I love Christmas, the wonder in the children's eyes as the creep down the stairs hoping that Santa has come or even better that he might still be there. A glimpse of the great man still at work is the goal of every child in the world. In this age of high technology with instant gratification it's lovely to see the kids write a letter and hope and pray that the big day will come tomorrow instead of waiting the next 5 or so days.

Ireland this year has been in turmoil, people losing their jobs, pay cuts everything. However I love being Irish and one of the thing I did not like about the Celtic tiger was I think we forgot who we are. In the way that everything was rush, people became completely self involved. This was not the way when we had no money. There was always a welcome and a smile. The other evening my wife and I slipped off to do some late evening shopping. In the shopping mall there was a guy at a table with a Christmas tree behind him. He was selling in memory of cards to hang on the tree in aid of cancer. My wife and I of course helped out as we have both lost family to cancer. I lost my sister when she was thirty and two years ago we lost my wife's father Jim, who was one of my best friends.

I started talking to the guy selling the cards and asked him how it was going? I have done this sort of work before so I know what it's like, hoping that people will help, without putting them under pressure.. He said that his belief in the Irish people had been restored. Even though we Irish have being going the worst year in History, so we are been told by the media, he told me that the generosity of the Irish people was amazing. Back to the good old days again, thank god. We may as a nation not have a lot, but we know that they are people a lot worse off.

Just as we were about to leave, lump in my throat with the thought of the people that I have lost. A women around my own age approached the desk with her four kids and took out a 20 note and put it on the desk. Her kids were from around 14 to six, I am good with kids ages as I have five of my own ages from 16 to 6. So just as I turned the mother says to her daughter who is one of the middle kids 'remember to say that we all love you and miss you daddy'. Well you can imagine how big the lump got in my throat.

So my Christmas thought is no matter what your financial situation is, even if you have the wagons circled. Its Christmas which is a time for joy, family and happiness, because if you are lucky enough to have all of your family with you, I do believe you have everything you need.
