Advantages of the Global Village
The phrase "global village" is perhaps overused, but not, I think, without reason. Technological advances truly have shrunk the globe, and it is not at all uncommon to find citizens of one country living and working in another, often literally on the other side of the world.
Transportation is faster and easier, and as the years and technology have progressed, the entire concept of "borders" has increasingly become more a convenience than a hindrance to trade, or to people physically moving about the globe pursuing economic or other interests. These days, the notion of a "global citizen" is becoming more and more mainstream, and if the long term trend continues, then the whole concept of the "nation" may become an obsolete construct.
Granted, that day is likely still quite some time off, but even now, it is easy to see how such a thing could occur. We truly are becoming a global village, and while that might make some people uneasy (and utterly terrify a few others), on the whole, my sense of it is that this is a good thing.
One thing remains true though. No matter who you are, or where you're from, or how long you've been away, sooner or later, almost everyone finds themselves longing for a taste of home. Maybe you had a favorite blend of tea you enjoyed when you lived in your home country. Or a favorite brand of snacks that your new home simply doesn't carry (or even know that it exists). Nostalgia can be a powerful force, and when it hits, it's nice to know that technology can help you in satisfying those cravings.
