How To Obtain A Passport Replacement When You Lose Your Passport
Most people feel like they just got punched in the stomach when they realize their passport has been lost or stolen. Learning how to obtain a passport replacement really is not too difficult since you have already been through the process of applying for a first time passport.
Contact the authorities
First things first, immediately contact the US Department of State if you are certain your passport is long gone. It is critically important to notify the authorities right away just in case someone tries to use your passport information.
If you are overseas on vacation, go to the nearest US embassy or consulate and they will be able to assist you. If you are in the United States then simply go to travel.state.gov and call them. One of the operators will be able to take your report and flag your lost passport in their system.
Application Process
Now that you have reported your stolen or misplaced passport, you will have to apply as if it was your first time. The only difference is a DS-64 application has to be filled out to detail how the passport was lost. This application is in addition to the DS-11 which also has to be completed.
Luckily, the process is much easier and convenient now. While you are on the travel.state.gov website to report the lost passport, you can also start the online application process for both the DS-11 and DS-64 applications.
You can also choose to use the PDF applications instead if do not want to use the online method of submitting your information electronically.
Supporting Documents
At this point, you have to obtain your original or certified birth certificate. You will also need to make a copy of your valid driver's license or any other type of valid government issued ID. Gather all of your documents and head on down to your local post office.
I'm sure this sounds familiar to you since this is essentially the exact same way you applied the first time around. Even though you have already been issued a passport before, it is not as easy to replace one as it is to renew a passport.
The acceptance agent there at the post office will have to look over your documents and witness you signing the passport application forms. Also while you are there, you can get your photographs taken which need to be included with the rest of your application package.
Now that you know more about replacing a lost passport, you can relax a bit knowing that the US Department of State invalidated the misplaced passport. Remember though, not to delay notifying the authorities so you don't have to deal with the headache of a criminal using your information.
