How to Travel Light and Enjoy the Journey

We've all seen pictures of our family members traveling, often with three or four bags per person for a one-week trip. Those days are gone, because of increased airport security, the rise in the cost to check bags, and a myriad of other reasons. What are the reasons to travel light?

First off, the more bags you have, the more stuff is at risk to be stolen or tampered with. The more bags you check, the more bags that are out of your possession and entrusted to someone else. Additionally, who has time to have their bags lost or rerouted to another city? Also, dishonest people will use checked bags to try to transport drugs or other restricted items, and that can get you into a lot of hassle, if not a lot of trouble. The security you gain by traveling light far outweighs the benefits of having seven extra outfits, pairs of shoes, or whatever else you would put in those extra bags.

Not only does it cost money to check bags with airlines these days, but you will save money in other ways, too. If you have too many bags to manage yourself, you will have to pay for a cart, a porter, or some other means to transport all your stuff. Once it's time to leave the airport, what do you do with all that luggage?

The less stuff you have, the easier it is to get around. This is true in more ways than one. Obviously it is true when you leave the airport and are looking for your means of travel to the next location. If you have lots of bags, you'll have to hire a taxi or other type of car. With just one bag, or two small bags, you can take the bus, subway, or some other form of transportation, saving you money, and giving you a better opportunity to see the city you're visiting. Additionally, if you are on the go a lot, you are at the mercy of your checked luggage. Forget taking an earlier flight, selling your seat, or traveling as an air courier. You have to think about where those bags are going to end up. If you're working with only carry-on luggage, you're at the mercy of nothing and no one, and you can do as you please.

It is not difficult to travel light. You merely have to think about the necessities, and only pack those things that you need to get through the trip. Toiletries are easy because you need to have small containers for air travel anyway. You can conserve space by rolling your clothes instead of folding them, and with the invention of certain modern technological devices, traveling light is so much easier. Instead of carting around a book of CDs, you have an mp3 player. Instead of toting a bag of books, you have an e-reading device. You have a laptop that stores all your pictures, documents, files, and entertainment. Take a lesson from these devices and condense, refine, and streamline.
