Learning to Sail: The Basics

To start with, the basics of learning to sail is to commence knowing the points of sail. The sailing positions are important since these are the stances where a sailing boat sails in accordance to the direction of the wind. There are actually three general types of sailing positions that a sailing boat can undertake on its course. When the wind is ahead of the boat, the sailing boat can take the beat mode. In this situation, the boat should be as much as possible be very proximate to the eye of the wind. The secret in making the most out of the situation is by using the tacking technique where adjusting the direction of the boat is dependable on where the wind blows. It is by changing the course of the boat in accordance to the wind direction that a sailor can take advantage of this condition.
The reach approach is perfect when the wind is just perfectly abeam, that is at the side of the boat or at an approximate angle of 90°. To enjoy the advantage of sailing in this mode, it is great if you would sail at least in 45° from the wind.
When the approach of running is used, where the wind is behind the boat, the best way to benefit from this point is to position your sail boat in 90° from the wind.
It is also important to take note that aside from the above major points of sailing, there are also intermediate positions which are interesting to know. Close reach is what we call with the situation in between beat and run, while broad reach is amid reach and run positions.
Part of learning to sail in its basic form is by knowing how to alter directions by maneuvering the course of your boat. If you want to reverse the direction of your sailing boat, you can do a come about tactic. Come about method is slow because in here the bow goes through the eye of the wind. Leeward maneuver is what you are going to use if you want to move away from the wind or to sail to the direction of the wind. The jibe approach is used when a speedy movement is desired. The boat usually goes across the wind in this method. It is essential that proper communication between the captain and the crew should take place at this point since it is a speedy maneuver. The command when doing a jibe is "jibe-ho".
